Looks from Books: Wonder by R.J. Palacio

For book club this month we read "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio which is a middle grader book which we normally don't read but Wonder is NOT a typical book.

Auggie is a fifth grader. His face is badly deformed and he spent much of his preschool years hiding under a toy astronaut helmet in and out of surgeries. When August starts attending school for the first time, he makes enemies and friends, enduring the worst kind of taunts and enjoying the best kinds of friendships.WONDER captures the dual nature of childhood, both how cruel and how tender we can be with one another. It's about the wounds we inflict and the scars we carry, all the things that teach us to do things differently the next time.

The main takeaway I got from reading Wonder is to be kinder than necessary.

"Kinder than is necessary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed." — R.J. Palacio (Wonder)
be the good

When Cents of Style contacted me about working with them and Jane.com on the Be the Good campaign I was excited to combine my love for fashion and share about working with individuals with special needs.

One of the main reasons I became a speech language pathologist was my desire to work with special needs individuals. While living in England and working at a school where I had the opportunity to work on a special needs language unit, I fell in love with working with special needs children and helping them as they learned to communicate. I came back to the U.S. and immediately enrolled in a speech pathology program. Now I get to spend every day working as a speech therapist with individuals with special needs.

We shot this look in a home under construction because I believe that "Being the Good" is the way to build good strong communities. To create this look I paired my favroite CJ by Cookie Johnson denim with my Jessica Simpson heels and my favorite boyfriend cardigan from Gap. Then I added my absolute favorite Cents of Style necklace for some glam.
In what ways are you striving to "Be the Good"?

"If every person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary - the world really would be a better place. And if you do this, if you act just a little kinder than is necessary, someone else, somewhere, someday, may recognize in you, in every single one of you, the face of God." — R.J. Palacio (Wonder)

Love, Jacque
