Delicious Reads: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Book Club Ideas

Hey guys welcome to Book Club Ideas for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I really liked this book and feel like we are introduced to many new "beasts" and this is where we hear about Tom Riddle's Diary (which later we know to become one of those things, I don't want to say in case you haven't read the whole series.) I moderated this book at our Harry Potter Retreat and there were so many things you could do for it. I had to choose which ones I would do because I couldn't do them all. Keep reading and find out all we did at our book club for this book.

{Decorations}

This book has tons of Beasties in it. So look for a giant spider and a giant snake to add to your decorations.

Another fun decoration would be the Weasley Clock. There are a ton of tutorials out there if you want to be adventurous and try to make one.

We didn't get one of these... but wouldn't it be awesome to find a fake frozen cat and hang it from the ceiling.

{Gifts}

I found these Ministry of Magic Printable Cards on Pinterest and they were perfect. I was able to save them as a psd and print their names on them. I had them fill out the rest when they got there and had ink for their fingerprints. I also took a picture of each person with my cute polaroid camera and glued them on the cards for them to take home.

I wanted everyone to have a notebook to take notes at the retreat so isn't the Tom Riddle Diary the perfect solution for this. I had a ton of fun researching ideas but had to tweak a few of them to get what I wanted. Here is what I came up with

Tom Riddle Diary

These are the supplies you will need:

* Black Cardstock Paper one sheet for each side of the book.

* Composition Notebook

* Book Corners

* Gold Liquid Oil Paint Pen Extra Fine Point

* Rubber Cement

* Needle Nose Pliers

* Scissors

* Pencil

Step one:

Measure each page you are going to cover with the rubber cement by outlining it with a pencil. I had the edge of the paper go a little bit over the binding of the notebook so there was a little wiggle room when glueing it down.

Step Two:

Cut the paper on the outline you just drew and keep the scraps of paper.

Step 3:

Glue the paper on top of the front and one on the back of the notebook with the rubber cement.

Step Four:

If you would like you can add a personal touch to the inside of the cover. This is what I put on the book for our retreat. I just made this in Photoshop and printed it out and trimmed it to fit the book.

Step Five:

Take the book corners and put them on each of the four corners of the book. Then I used the needle nose pliers to squeeze the ends shut so they wouldn't fall off.

This is what it will look like so far.

Step Six:

I used the scraps of paper to make these rectangular pieces of paper to write Tom Marvolo Riddle on. You can do what ever size you want. I used the Gold Pen to make the words stand out and then I glued the paper onto the front cover.

This is the finished Diary!

I think it turned out great and everyone loved them. This pic also has the book mark in it.

Basilisk Fang Book Mark

Supplies you will need:

* Sculpey Oven Bake Clay

* Gold Wire

* Glaze

* Black Ribbon

Step One:

I cut the clay up into 25 pieces because that was how many people were coming to book club.

Step Two:

I showed my teenager what I wanted it to look like and had her make all 25 of them. When making them I put a hole in the top so that I can thread the wire through once they are baked.

Step Three:

We put them all on a baking sheet and followed the directions on how long to bake them.

Step Four:

I let them cool overnight and then I put the glaze on them and let it air dry with a couple of coats.

Step Five:

I used the wire to make a pretty wrap around the fang so I can attach the ribbon on for the book mark.

Step Six:

I cut the ribbon into the length I wanted and tied it onto the fang.

Finished Book Mark

Wand Pen

We couldn't have a diary and not have a pen to go with it. So I found a tutorial on Pinterest that I liked and tweaked it just a little bit.

Supplies you will need:

* Hot Glue Gun

* Glue Sticks

* Pens

* Raw Umber Folk Art Acrylic Paint

* Antiqued Gold Metallic Paint

* Satin Clear Coat Spray Paint

* Styrofoam Holder

Step One:

All you need to do is put a bunch of glue all over the pen. I tried to make it look like wood with a big glob of glue on the top. Put the pens in the styrofoam block to stand upright.

Step Two:

After the glue has dried then apply the base color of paint that is the darker shade. Let that air dry.

Step Three:

Put the metallic coat of paint on top but don't put it all over the pen. I lightly brushed it on and didn't put it in the grooves. You just want to give it dimension.

Step Four:

Lastly I sprayed it with the Satin Coat to seal it all. I didn't want it looking too shiny. You are all finished. It shouldn't take you too long to do these.

{Quiz}

I kind of made my own Quiz. I was Moaning Myrtle at the Retreat so I posed as the substitute teacher for The Defense Against the Dark Arts Class. The quiz is from part of the quiz in the book that Gilderoy Lockhart gives the students on the first day and part of it is about Moaning Myrtle.

{Discussion}

At the beginning of the discussion I passed out these Signed Photos of our favorite Professor

Gilderoy Lockhart. I printed them at my local Costco and then used this pen to sign over the signature to give it a more real look.
